Bringing Bibles to the Porn Industry

As most of you know I am a supporter of the Christian ministry/movement called XXXchurch.com. With that support comes the act of keeping myself updated on the goings on of the organization through their BLOG. Recently I came across an entry that I was ticked off by. Below is what I read:

"We have been doing ministry for several years now and have had a great outreach at the porn shows. On three different occasions, we have given away Bibles for free at porn shows. Much to our surprise, they were well received. Since we are on a tight budget here at XXXchurch.com, we always try and get the best deal we can... which means the Bible covers are usually less than cool. After the last show in Las Vegas, where we gave away 1000 bibles, I looked into getting custom bibles printed that would match the whole look of our booth. We have a 10-foot backdrop, postcards, stickers, and T-shirts that all have “Jesus Loves Porn Stars” design. The new Bible cover art was an attempt to customize that image and message with the powerful word of God. The cooler the cover, the more separated from all the trash someone gets at a porn show, the more likely it gets picked up and read.

I contacted the American Bible Society and had made arrangements months ago to order 10,000 bibles. We have 3 porn shows coming up (Erotica LA, June. Gay Erotica NY, October. AVN Expo Las Vegas, January.) The cost was over $7,000 but in our opinion it was money well spent. They printed the Bibles prior to getting our cover artwork. Two weeks ago, we sent over the cover art and all hell broke loose.

Long story short…they have refunded all of our money and have refused to print the Bibles. They have told us that this goes against everything the Bible stands for and they don’t want anyone to think that Jesus is okay with porn. We think they are wrong. We think this goes with the central message of the gospel and Jesus loves you regardless of your profession.

Once again, this is not about shock tactics, this is about trying to get the word of God to places most say would be impossible but we have found a way to do it. Not printing the Bibles hinders the gospel of Christ from going forth and that bothers us.We will get these Bibles printed. Someone will step up and help us. No doubt that will happen."

The LA TIMES wrote an article about the debachal as well. Read that HERE.

All of this to say that although their (XXXchurch.com) tactics for fighting against the grip of pornography on our culture may not look very reverent, they are making an impact. They have been and will continue to be effective! Bibles are getting into the hands of porn stars and the porn film-makers. How can this possibly be a bad thing? How can we not want to help make that happen?

On their blog they give you the opportunity to support this campaign by buying a "Jesus loves porn stars" t-shirt or sponsoring Bibles that will get into the hands of those perpetuating the porn industry. Go to the BLOG if you are interested in helping this worthy cause.

It's an "in your face" type of ministry with a message like that and I feel a little uncomfortable with it being on the front of a Bible myself. I'm not sure why - I guess I'm old-school and feel like the Bible is a special message. I want everyone to have a Bible, and to read it, however so I guess I lean towards the "whatever it takes" mode......... hmmm

Well, it's no secret that I'm into trying different ways to help people see people as people and not issues so I know that the Bibles will be printed and handed out as God intends. It's already done in God's version of time, the Church guys just need to be alert to what their role is in allowing it to happen.
My concern is the lack of relationship in this strategy. It's people and their spiritual modeling that'll break someone through into acting on a relationship with God, not just handing out a Bible at a show. Perhaps because of people's negative experience and/or lack of attention and effort by the Church that they are in the porn industry at all. It's more work, because it means more. So...one of my MANY mottos I live by is Be It, (instead of Do It). Results may vary. :)
