My Night in the ER

Im a little tired today, to say the least. Especially after spending 3 hours in the Emergency Room last night. Jaxon woke up struggling to breathe and with a barking cough so we went to the hospital where they diagnosed him with CROUP. They took his temperature which turned out to be 105 degrees so they gave him Motrin to reduce that. Then they took chest X-rays, not a pleasant experience. Then they gave him a steroid shot to reduce the inflamation in his throat and began breathing treatments.

Croup is an infection usually caused by one of the cold viruses. Croup causes the trachea (windpipe) and larynx (voice box) to swell. Basically Jaxon's throat was swelling itself shut and he was struggling to breathe through it.

Our instructions for treatment at home include: a humidifier for a few nights or during an acute attack, holding him in a steamy bathroom for 10 minutes or in FL taking him outside in the evenings-anything where moist air is available. The best thing to do is keep him calm since fear and crying make the attacks worse. Plus we are to pump him with fluids, watch and maintain his fever, and keep him away from everyone.

It is likely that he will have a couple more episodes like last night for a few more nights so please pray that they will subside quickly and he will get the rest he needs for his little body to heal.

Bethany, I hate to hear that. I am glad you were able to get him some relief at the hospital. FYI- Jaxon (2T's nephew) battles that quite often. It is not fun. We will be praying for Jaxon and you!
